Prof. Dr. Manuel Pinto Coelho
Short Bio:
With more than 50 years of clinical practice, Manuel Pinto Coelho MD, PhD is one of the pioneers in introducing the concepts of anti-aging medicine in Portugal. He stands out for advocating the principles of integral medicine, which aims to prevent illness and prepare the body to combat it when necessary.
His career began with a focus on combating drug addiction, with clinics in Galamares and Gondomar, and as a consultant on drug addiction for Lisbon’s City Council. He also founded the Association for a Drug-Free Portugal.
Pinto Coelho MD, PhD served as the team physician for Sporting Clube de Portugal’s professional football team from 1981 to 1982, during which the team won the National Championship, the Portuguese Cup, and the Super Cup (its first treble). He was also the personal doctor of Portugal’s Prime Minister, Pedro Santana Lopes, from 2004 to 2005.
The life-changing diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in his son Bernardo led him on a quest to slow the progression of the disease. This journey introduced him to the vital role of nutrition in health and the tools available to prevent diseases, aid healing, and improve longevity and well-being.
As a result, he became one of the leading figures in anti-aging medicine in Portugal, advocating for practices that initially met with criticism but are now recognized as essential to understanding and preserving human health. These include the importance of the immune system, the gut and microbiota, the role of sunlight and vitamin D, among others.
In clinical practice, his results, supported by testimonials from those he treats, demonstrate the validity of his approach. Through his books, interviews, and articles in media and on social networks, he has campaigned against sugar and its harmful effects on health, exposing how the global population has been deceived by this “sweet poison.”
Key aspects of his work include understanding cholesterol, the protective role of beneficial bacteria, the health benefits of sunlight and seawater, and simple practices such as cold showers and barefoot walking. His integral medicine approach is a powerful ally for a healthy and prolonged life.
In 2015, he founded the Chegar Novo a Velho Clinic (“Stay Young as You Age Clinic”), named after one of his books, which became a best-seller in Portugal. The book was the best-selling non-fiction title in 2016 and 2017. That same year, he became a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and since 2016, he has been a “Great Distinction” member of the World Society of Anti-Aging Medicine.
The work at the Pinto Coelho Clinic – Live Longer, formerly Chegar Novo a Velho Clinic, is based on 11 pillars: inflammation control, nutrition, personalized supplementation, bio-identical hormonal modulation, toxin and heavy metal reduction, genetics and epigenetics, sleep quality, healthy sexual life, mobility and physical exercise, gut health, and mental and spiritual health.
In 2018, the clinic was awarded the International Award in Excellence and Quality (IAEQ).
Beyond clinical practice, he participates in conferences, interviews, and podcasts, and is a prolific writer. He is among the most published authors in Portugal in the field of medicine. Notable books include:
